BHATT AWARDED GANDHI PEACE PRIZE
Shri Chandi Prasad Bhatt,
eminent Gandhian and environmentalist, has been awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2013.
The jury for the prize met under the Chairmanship of
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 18th February and decided on his name, a press
release in New Delhi said.
Other members of the jury were Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam, Leader of
the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Rajya Sabha member Karan Singh and
former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
Born in 1934, Bhatt was one of the pioneers of the Chipko movement for which he
was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1982.
He is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 2005. One of India's first
modern environmentalists, he is known for his work on subaltern social ecology,
the release added.
