SHEIKH
HASINA SWORN IN FOR 3rd TIME AS BANGLADESH PM
In
Bangladesh, a new government led by Sheikh Hasina
has taken over. President Abdul Hamid
administered the oath of office to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her new
Council of Ministers at a glittering ceremony in President's House, Bangababan,
this evening. Over a 1000 guests including members of the diplomatic corps
attended the ceremony. This is the third time that Sheikh Hasina is leading a Awami League government in Bangladesh and this is
the first time that Awami League has formed a government for two consecutive
terms. She headed the government in 1996 and again in 2009. Awami League won a
massive victory in elections held last Sunday for the 10th Parliament, which
were boycotted by the BNP-led 18 party opposition alliance. Awami League won a
total of 232 seats out of 300 constituencies, 105 contested and 127
uncontested. Jatiya party has emerged as the main opposition in the parliament
with 33 MPs and has elected senior leader Rawshan Ershad as the Opposition
leader. Earlier today, the interim polls-time cabinet was dissolved.
