GOVT. MAKES MAJOR CHANGES IN MNREGA
Central government has made major changes in its
flagship programme, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act,
MNREGA, including Rs. 10,000 for constructing toilets for all job card holders
and assistance for buildings for women self help federations.
Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said in New Delhi that under the new
provisions every job card holder will be entitled to build a toilet and the
MNREGA's contribution for it has been raised from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 10,000.
Ramesh said that with this decision, the government is univeralising the toilet
construction programme in the country where 60 per cent of its people still
defecate in the open.
He also announced compensation for MNREGA workers over delay in payment saying
if it is delayed beyond 15 days, the amount would be deducted from officials
responsible for it.
