GAGAN
TO BEGIN INITIAL OPERATIONS BY DECEMBER END
A GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation system called
GAGAN is set to begin initial operations by the December end. GAGAN will create
straight and direct air routes, vastly improve precise take-offs and landings and
save five per cent of airlines’ fuel bills.
It will also benefit banking and financial networks, power grids, precision
agriculture, as well as land, sea and air transport.
Defence establishments too can use positional and time information from GAGAN
while using missiles or smart bombs and also in unmanned warfare.
In the coming years, seven satellites will carry GAGAN signals covering a vast
geographical area from Africa to Australia and will facilitate expansion of the
service area far beyond Indian airspace.
ISRO sources say that the task of launching all the seven satellites will be
completed in 18 months.
