VALUING FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION ON WORLD
FOOD DAY
“There
are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the
form of bread,” said Mahatma Gandhi once, whose thought couldn’t have been more
appropriate in today’s world wherein food wastage is as much a concern as is
its adulteration.
World
Food Day is being celebrated today in honor of the date of the founding of the
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.
The theme for 2013 is "Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and
Nutrition."
World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO's Member Countries at the
Organization's 20th General Conference in November 1945.
It has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising
awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger.
