RAJIV GANDHI KHEL RATNA & ARJUNA AWARD -2013
Trap shooter Ronjan Sodhi has been recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and star cricketer Virat Kohli is among the 14 sportspersons picked for the Arjuna award. Among others recommended for Arjuna awards by the selection committee headed by billiards legend Michael Ferreira are: rising badminton star P V Sindhu and triple-jumper Renjith Maheshwary.
Sodhi, who was
conferred the Arjuna award in 2009, will become the seventh shooter to be
honoured with the Khel Ratna once his name is ratified by the Sports
Ministry.
Interestingly, it is
for the third consecutive year that a Khel Ratna award has gone to a shooter. Gagan Narang had been
presented the award in 2011, followed by Vijay Kumar last year.
The list includes quite a few women with veteran squash player Joshna Chinappa, former hockey captain Saba Anjum, paddler Mouma Das, wrestler Neha Rathi and shooter Rajkumari Rathore.
Archer Chekrovolu Swuro, who was part of the silver medal-winning team in the 2011 World Cup also figures in the list.
