INDIA'S COMMUNICATION SATELLITE GSAT-16 LAUNCHED SUCCESSFULLY

India's communication satellite, GSAT-16, was successfully launched at 02:10 hrs IST today (December 7, 2014) by the Ariane-5 launch vehicle VA221 of Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana. Ariane-5 precisely placed GSAT-16 into the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), after a flight of 32 minutes and 20.4 Seconds duration.

ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka started acquiring the signal from the satellite at 0241 hrs IST and the commanding of the satellite was initiated. Initial checks have indicated normal health of the satellite.

The present orbit of the satellite will be raised to Geostationary Orbit of about 36,000 km altitude through three orbit raising manoeuvres by the firing of GSAT-16's Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) Engine. Preparations are underway for the first firing, planned in the early hours of December 8, 2014. The satellite will be placed in the Geostationary Orbit by December 12, 2014 and subsequently the satellite's communication transponders will be switched on for in-orbit testing.

CURRENT UPDATE : NEW CBI DIRECTOR

ANIL KUMAR SINHA TAKES OVER AS DIRECTOR, CBI

Shri Anil Kumar Sinha, an IPS Officer of 1979 Batch (Bihar Cadre) today took over as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation. Before joining, he was serving as Special Director in CBI.

While interacting with media, Shri Sinha said, "I accept the responsibility to head the premier investigation agency with deep humility. I am aware of the challenges facing the CBI and would endeavour to work with my team to strengthen the cause of justice and reiterate our commitment to the values enshrined in the motto of the organisation i.e industry, impartiality and integrity. I seek cooperation of all in discharge of my responsibilities".

Shri Sinha has earlier held several important positions in his State cadre in Vigilance & Anti Corruption, Administration, Special Branch & other Divisions as SP, DIG, IG & ADG. He has served as Additional Director General of Police(Law & Order) and thereafter as Additional DG, he headed the Vigilance Investigation Bureau. He has been associated with the investigations of a number of sensitive cases, including a large number of trap cases and Disproportionate Assets Cases against corrupt public servants that ended in convictions of the accused persons and also in confiscation of their ill gotten property. He has also served as DIG & IG in Special Protection Group, New Delhi and Additional Secretary in Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi.

Shri Anil Kumar Sinha is a Post Graduate in Psychology and M.Phil in Strategic Studies. He has received training in Leading Economic Growth from Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He has been decorated with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2000 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2006

FIFTH BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY STATEMENT 2014-2015

Monetary and Liquidity Measures

On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation, it has been decided to:

`      Keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 8.0 per cent

`      Keep the cash reserve ratio (CRR) of scheduled banks unchanged at 4.0 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL)

`      Continue to provide liquidity under overnight repos at 0.25 per cent of bank-wise NDTL at the LAF repo rate and liquidity under 7-day and 14-day term repos of up to 0.75 per cent of NDTL of the banking system through auctions

`      Continue with daily one-day term repos and reverse repos to smooth liquidity.

Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF will remain unchanged at 7.0 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 9.0 per cent.
